This whole project reads like three versions of the same adventure. In the magazine-sized zine, two photographers, Hayden Steadman & Alex O'Nan make the trek into the deserts and dry rolling hills of California to the railroad bencher meccas of the Cajon Pass and the Tehachapi Loop. BNSF power pulls long lines of intermodals, autoracks, and mixed freight around gigantic grassland mounds and through picturesque tunnels tying knots out of heavy tonnage metal snakes. Photos of the Barstow yard, singular cars out in the middle of nowhere, miles of giant windmills, dryrotted recreational vehicles half-covered in sand, and the lines of time on the faces of those who live out there.
The zine is beautiful. You can read it one way for one photographer's interpretation, and then flip it to see the same events from the lens of the other photographer. The whole experience is amplified by a link you will recieve in the email after your purchase, which allows you to stream or download an epic 30-minute video of the adventure. It shows moments captured within the zine, bringing them to life in motion, while also introducing you to many moments in-between the pages of the zine.
Another polished presentation from the folks at NEAR ZINE who personally understand the freight world from the perspective of a rail fan, a worker, and a moniker writer.
