If you are interested in the punky roots of 90's era train hopping / traveler-kid culture, check out this new zine combo from FLUKE. This tale starts with two people meeting at a zinefest, where they realize that they share a similar untold past as punk women traveling during the 1990s. Fast forward and Phoenix's Fluke Publishing has made lots of copies of this new classic travel zine.
The Yard Wide Yarns side is brought to you by Jessica Mills, a writer for Maximum Rock N Roll and the first horn player for Less Than Jake. Seeing that this is issue #24, I feel pretty left out on the history of this series. Wish there was a book compilation... This one here though is the kind of travel writing that I love. Tales of dive bars, sunsets, small towns. Side tales Olympia, WA and Evergreen in the late 90's, serious mountain hikes on PNW trails with giant packs, hitchhiking. The "ride all rides" kind of adventure. It has a surprise ending that actually leads into what will become Jessica's next body of work and writing: motherhood.
Brush Your Teeth With Whiskey is the other side of this combo zine. This story follows Xiola Bee on a seemingly never-ending road trip from Memphis, TN to New Orleans. The crew around Xiola is filled with the slack drunk punk road kids that were typical of the time. Great characters, great stories, and great luck when they tried to move; catching boxcars, hoppers on the fly, and tons of thumbing rides. Most of the time tough, they seemed to live the homebum life of sleeping in parks, drinking 40's, living the care-free party. This one ends with a great cliffhanger too. It exemplifies the unknown future embodied by all travelers with nowhere to go.
